Back To School With Bamboo!

Yellow buses are back on the street and stores are crammed with harried parents rushing to prepare their children for the new school year.  And any time there is a chance to shop, there is a chance to make a good choice for the environment.

By choosing items made from bamboo, you are choosing to utilize a highly renewable resource that is gaining in popularity with each new year.

While more and more students are using laptops over notepads, there are still some basic supplies needed for the classroom.  Bamboo pencils, a Bamboo pencil holder for your desk and bamboo notebooks are all available.  As school lunches continue to get a bad reputation, take caution and make a lunch at home for your little scholar.  Investing in a bamboo lunch box not only takes advantage of a sustainable material but also reduces the waste associated with using a new paper bag each day. If you still have a little one at home and not even thinking about school, treat him/her to a fun and super soft baby tee and baby pants set made from 100% bamboo viscose!

Of course the back to school list grows with each new grade and heading off to college is akin to furnishing an apartment.  There are many ways to bamboo the dorm room!  In this age, most students require a computer to succeed at school and while there is not a 100% bamboo computer, there are many ways that tech companies are taking advantage of the sturdy material for packaging and components.

The futon has long been a staple of college dorm rooms for lounging, extra guests or even a place to crash if laundry takes over the regular beds!  Bamboo futon frames are great choices as this piece of furniture is bound to take a beating in a cramped dorm room.  Organic mattress options and bamboo fabric covers are also available.

Perhaps the biggest impact bamboo can make on the dorm room is with bamboo fabric.  Because good hygiene and easy access to laundry machines are not guaranteed, it’s smart to invest in bamboo bed linens as they will ward off odor and can go longer than your average cotton sheet without needing a wash.  Because bamboo wicks away moisture easily, the odds of it helping it keep a room fresh are high.  The same advice pertains to the dorm bathrooms – take advantage of luxuriously soft bamboo bath towels to keep your college student nice and dry and fungus-free.  (Don’t grimace – it happens!)

Bamboo clothes are also ideal for the busy college student! Living in a world where most clothes will be crammed into drawers or stored in piles at the foot of the bed, most students will enjoy the fact that bamboo clothes are wrinkle and odor-resistant.  The stylish and comfortable bamboo T shirts might even last without a wash until that first trip home with a stuffed laundry bag.  There are loungewear options to for those long study sessions and women’s pajamas for those few hours of sleep that can occur.  Heck, the feet can even be protected from the onslaught of germs with wicking socks!

Bamboo Twin Sheets

The uses of bamboo for college life are many.  One could choose to make a statement and cruise around campus on a unique bamboo bike or ward off the dreaded Freshman 15 by relieving stress and keeping hands busy knitting with bamboo yarn.

Good luck this semester!
