The sun has barely risen this morning yet already, thousands of holiday Santas have finished shopping for everyone on their nice list. Black Friday is in full swing and while many would think that the name comes from the fact that this shopping day will put retailers “in the black,” so to speak, we can actually thank the Philadelphia police department for coining the term which they used to describe the disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that occurred the day after Thanksgiving as shoppers hit the stores. After all, most of us are guaranteed a day off every year after Thanksgiving!
But not so lucky are the folks working retail, some of whom reported to work as early as 1 a.m. this morning to prep their stores for the mad dash of shoppers. Holiday favorites include toys and electronics and some malls have reported as many as 1800 people waiting to get in when their doors opened. A hot shopping trend that some stores didn’t see coming? Household appliances!
In the zealousness to beat their competitors, many stores not only dropped prices but also further eroded a family holiday by opening up on Thanksgiving Day itself. Wal-Mart opted to keep their doors open for 24 hours and offered smaller bargains for shoppers willing to come inside and wait for their Black Friday electronics specials while for the first time in the chains history, Toys R Us opened at 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day to lure shoppers and reported anywhere from 500 – 1000 shoppers waiting to get in their doors.
