Funky, Fun and Eco-Friendly – Great Christmas Gifts For Everyone!

17 days until Christmas! Still plenty of time to find the perfect gift for that certain someone and along with that perfect gift, give the message of responsibility and sustainability by choosing an environmentally friendly present like the ones listed below.

Proving that eco-friendly can still be fashionable, the ‘Socorro’ handbag from Escama Studio is “the original Pop Top bag.”  It is hand-crocheted with over 700 post-consumer recycled pop tops by artists working in co-operatives located in Brazil.  The groups of artists in the community earn a living wage through these handicrafts and gain self-esteem and social integration through their hard work.  Each handbag comes with a hang tag bearing the signature of the artist who made it.

Says designer Andrew Krumholz:  “Being sustainable means more than repurposing post-consumer materials. We’ve also provided work for many Brazilian artisans and their families.”

And the pop-top handbag is the perfect complement to stylish women’s clothing made with luxurious bamboo fabric.  Bamboo clothes are soft, luxurious and made with a product that is highly sustainable.  The bamboo plant can be harvested every 3-4 years without being yanked from the ground and the plant itself generates 35% more oxygen than an equivalent strand of trees.   If clothing isn’t an option for giving, consider bamboo sheets or organic towels!

Or if a little love and hard work goes into a gift, take up knitting needles and make a unique gift from bamboo yarn!  The yarn is available at most local craft stores and there are patterns for socks, gloves, scarves, hats and sweaters (among so many other options!).

For the vegan who likes to make a statement, consider the vegan cosmetic line offered by Urban Decay.  Vegan cosmetics are formulated without any ingredients derived from animal sources, including materials that come indirectly from an animal (i.e – honey).  Urban Decay’s vegan collection is designed for eye make-up and features primer, eyeliner, and six shadows.  Just look for products featuring a purple paw on their website.

For a wider selection of gifts to choose from, visit eco-artware.com.  Shopping categories range from bags to pet gear to women’s jewelry.  According to their website, eco-artware is a one-stop gift shop for “all things beautiful, well-made and environmentally friendly.”  Right away, I targeted in on a toiletry bag made from repurposed British Fire Hoses and lined with military-grade waste parachute silk. Creativity, style and a re-imagined use for an item that could easily have found its way to a landfill!

For anyone looking for the truly unique, a gift featuring sustainable or re-purposed materials is the way to go.  Wrap any of these up for everyone on your “nice” list!
