It must be a mom thing. Celebrities from Jessica Alba to Halle Berry are motivated to be as eco-friendly as possible for the benefit of their uber-cute bambinos. To be fair, Berry had a green thumb before the birth of her daughter. She has been an avid supporter of the Shaster Foundation’s Indlovu Project which supports the Monwabisi Park community and is committed to building an eco-friendly clinic, youth center and soup kitchen. And in 2006, Berry joined other celebrities to protect the California coastal from destruction from the Cabrillo Port Liquefied Natural Gas facility.
When it came to preparing for daughter Nahla’s arrival, Berry kept it green by using as many environmentally friendly products as possible, including diapers!
“I’m working on the nursery, but it’s all going to be organic and eco-friendly,” said Berry. “There are so many things out now that you can use. I’m going to really try hard to make it all organic!”
Thankfully companies are responding to the demand for organic, sustainable children’s clothing. Green Earth Bamboo offers adorable organic baby onesies and this long sleeve toddler dress that is perfect for Berry’s growing fashionista. And for the nursery, there are sleep-inducing soft organic bamboo crib sheets!
Berry also had some help in the nursery from Monte Design, a Canadian furniture design company that specializes in nursery design and eco-friendly materials. Monte Design keeps it green by:
- Using foam that is manufactured from natural seed-based oils such as soybean.
- Using foam that is both C.F.C and P.B.D.E free.
- Using wood that meets the LEED requirements for wood adhesives.
- Using glue in the frame construction that is water-based and biodegradable.
- Using wood that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
- Using fabrics that are manufactured according to Oeko-Tex Standard 100.
- Using shipping boxes made from over 95% recycled materials.
While using bamboo is an option they could look into as it can be harvested after four year’s growth, Monte Design is a fantastic example of a company willing to offer consumers the choice to go green! (What an amazing material is bamboo that it can go from snuggly soft material to sturdy beautiful furniture!)
