Fashion hurts.  Or at least it does in the mind of some.  Too often the expectation is that we should force ourselves into skinny jeans, pencil skirts, binding shirts and all for the sake of looking good.  (Don’t get me started on high heels.)  Maybe it’s because I’ve spent the week swathed in comfortable bamboo clothing including my new favorite wardrobe staple, the bamboo long sleeve wrap. 

Since we all can’t (or won’t) dress like Lady GaGa and sacrifice ease for the sake of fashion, here are some reasons that comfort should be key in clothing:

The relief of back pain – What might be attributed to stress or poor posture might actually be a result of too tight pants.  When pants are worn too tightly and ride low on the body, the nerves in the back can become compressed.  People may even experience numbness and tingling in the legs and stress on the back.  A perfect solution to this is my other new favorite, the bamboo tea length skirt!

The avoidance of fainting – While we certainly aren’t lacing ourselves up in corsets like Scarlett O’Hara, tight tops reduce the ability to breathe deeply which reduces our overall oxygen intake.  This problem mainly occurs because of restrictive undergarments but if those undergarments are necessary to squeeze into a too tight top, consider a more flattering draped design like this bamboo gathered top.

The Reduction of Acid Reflux and/or Heartburn – Often caused by our modern diet and the side of stress that goes along with it, these uncomfortable sensations can also be a result of continued, tight pressure against the abdomen which causes acid to shoot back up into the esophagus.  Wearing less constrictive clothing could help reduce these issues.

The Relief of pain from Fibromyalgia – Fibromyalgia is characterized by fatigue and daily pain and something as simple as a wardrobe change could help relieve some of that daily pain.  According to Nathan Wei, MD, director of the Arthritis Treatment Center in Frederick, MD, ““People who have fibromyalgia have a condition where even light touch can be perceived as being painful. This is called allodynia. As a result, clothes should be loose-fitting, lightweight, and non-constricting.”

The Reduction of travel-related stress – It’s tight enough on airplanes as we get packed in like sardines so don’t add to the discomfort by wearing uncomfortable clothing.  Choose loose-fitting outfits and dress in layers as it can go from hot to cold easily in an airplane cabin.  (Bamboo clothing is an excellent choice for travel as it is not only wrinkle-resistant but also thermo-regulating!)

To Help cope with Social Anxiety Disorder – Some doctors have speculated that people suffering from SAD may have skin that is oversensitive making uncomfortable fabrics and constrictive clothing a trigger for anxiety.  Choosing soft fabrics and relaxed fits may help.

The Avoidance of rash/hives – While not the main factor, uncomfortable clothing including clothes made from synthetics that have rough edges and burrs along the seams can cause ongoing skin irritation.  Choose soft fabrics (like bamboo) to avoid this problem.

The Scarf as a Necklace:  Transition from day to night by changing a simple scarf into a knotted necklace.  Place the scarf around your neck so both sides hang down in front.  Tie the ends together wherever you would like your necklace to start and make multiple knots down the length of the scarf.  With this pattern, you can create as many or as few knots as you’d like.

The Scarf as a Shrug:  Perfect for those times that a jacket will just be too much!  Drape the scarf (a larger one) around your back.  Pull the ends of the scarf up and over your arms and then tie the ends of the scarf behind your back in a simple knot.  As simple as that, your scarf transforms into a shrug!

The scarf as an undercoat:  For those days when a cami just won’t cut it, liven up a jacket or sweater with a scarf.  Fold the scarf in half and then fold in half one more time.  Hang the scarf around your neck and criss-cross the two ends.  Tuck the two ends into your sweater or coat. 

The scarf as a belt:  Thread a thin scarf through existing belt loops to utilize as a colorful belt or go more sash-like by folding the scarf to the desired width and tying it around your waist into a simple bow.

It is cold here in Chicago.  I am sure that is cold where many of you live too.  However, your exercise routine doesn’t have to take a break just because of the weather.  Outdoor walking has some very surprising benefits!

First, it keeps your bones strong.  Instead of staying indoors when it is cold (like a bear hibernating), get outside.  When you are inside, you are most likely getting too little sunlight.  Sun exposure triggers vitamin D production in the skin, and bones need vitamin D to properly absorb calcium.  A winter walk of just 15 minutes two to three times a week is enough to help your body out.

Next, it will improve your mood.  A University of Washington study of 112 women showed that women who took a brisk outdoor walk for 20 minutes daily had a better mood, higher self-esteem, and an improved sense of well-being.  The researchers surmised that winter walking could provide an effective, easy to stick with therapy for mild to moderate depression.

Also, outdoor walking is more motivating.  No matter where you walk, you always have to walk back home.  If you are on a treadmill, you can just hit “stop” and might not push yourself as hard as you could.

Lastly, it burns calories.  Granted, you can burn calories on sunny summer days too.  But with the added resistance of walking through snow, you are guaranteed to burn more calories on a winter walk.  Because it is harder to move your feet and requires you to lift your legs higher, you will need more energy to walk through snow.  If you live in the Midwest, be prepared to feel the burn today with an estimated 24 inches of snow coming your way!

So if you decide to take on the challenge of walking outside instead of using the treadmill, you need to make sure that you have the right clothes for this work-out. 

Check to see what kind of fabric your workout clothes are made from.  Cotton holds in sweat and has a chafing effect on your body, so it is fabric that you should avoid.  You will get chilled quickly if you have sweat clinging to your body in these cold temperatures.  Instead, wear items made with a wicking fabric like bamboo.  Bamboo T-shirts and bamboo jackets will do the trick.  A pair of bamboo socks will keep your feet dry too!

My parents flew to Las Vegas from Wisconsin on Sunday.  Their plane left late, so they missed the Green Bay Packers beating the Chicago Bears.  However, something even worse happened – the airlines lost their luggage.  My mom carries an extra outfit in her carry-on (which is a must because most airlines make you wait 24 – 48 hours before they will cover your costs on new clothing and toiletries).  However, many do not take that precaution and may need to get a new outfit that can be worn more than once (which means no panic shopping!).  Here are a few guidelines to help you out:

1.  Chose only one store to shop at.  I prefer Green Earth Bamboo myself, but make sure you choose a store that you have had success with in the past.  This will make your shopping trip less overwhelming.  You also will save yourself time because you won’t need to look at 20 stores in case they might have something better. 
2. Start dressing from the bottom up.  Yes, that means look at shoes first!  Stick to the basics – no open-toe shoes, no platform stilettos.  Often times, your shoe choice will dictate the color choice for your outfit.
3. Pick a neutral color and stick with it.  I am a personal fan of black, but you can choose camel, navy, grey, beige, etc.  You can also see what the store has available in each color by taking a quick look around. 
4. Choose a skirt/dress in a classic shape.  I recommend giving up pants.  Finding a pant that fits well can be next to impossible in the best of circumstances.  If you need clothes now, it may be a lost cause.  (Tip:  When heading to the fitting rooms, take multiple sizes of the same thing.  Otherwise, you waste a ton of time running back and forth to get the next size up or the next size down.  The other problem is that you forget where you grabbed the item!).  For example, this bamboo skirt is a classic addition.
5. Try to pick a top that has a little color to it.  Too much black can be a bad thing (and make people wonder if you are in mourning.)  This bamboo ladies twist top would make a stylish and versatile addition to your wardrobe.
